This costume can cost as little as 15 dollars depending on what you already have on hand at home and you'll still be able to say "I made it myself!" Prep, dyeing & Rinse time: Color Perfect Color Stay Dye Fixative When I thought about having kids, one of my first thoughts was "I will make ALL the Halloween costumes!" and then reality hit.
I can't sew really well and my grand ideas rarely materialize the way I envision them. But this costume is EASY. If I can do it, so can you. And it's quick and inexpensive too. I bought the least expensive muslin fabric (about 2 yards but I probably could have gotten away with 1 at 2.99 a yard. The pillow is from Jo-Ann fabrics and was 9.99 but I used a 50% off coupon. Because liquid dye just requires you to add water, it's easy to pour out just the amount you need into the sink. I barely used 1/4 of a bottle of any of these (and only a tiny splash of black) so I have plenty left for future projects. To make the salmon piece, I draped the fabric over the little pillow and sketched on the lines I wanted. Lightly with a pencil.Filled in the lines with Elmer's Blue Gel glue which acts as a nice resist to dye. Make sure the glue is FULLY dry before you dye or the glue will wash out in the next step and all your work will go down the drain. Literally. To get the perfect salmon color, I used a bit of orange and then a splash of pink.
Always check your dye color by dipping the corner of a white disposable napkin into your dye bath. Adjust colors by adding a bit more or this or that or adding more water to lighten the effect.See how the glue acts as a resist here? Pro-tip: usually you use really, really hot water to dye fabric, right? When you're working on a glue resist project, the water should be closer to lukewarm. Water that is too hot will melt the glue off and, again, all your work goes down the drain. I also dyed a bit of remaining fabric in petal pink (to represent ginger)and then one in Apple Green with the tiniest splash of black to represent wasabi and one longer piece in black with just a splash of the Apple Green. I then used a hot glue gun to add them to a headband we had on hand with a pair of chopsticks from a Chinese takeout food place. I also hot glued the "salmon" dyed fabric around the little pillow. I treated it like I was wrapping a gift.I simply wrapped the pillow with the dyed "seaweed" over a white dress and my little sushi girl is ready for her Halloween party.
