The décor is easy-going and friendly, the set up is casual (you order up at the counter), the colors are bright and youthful and they primarily serve burgers. Eh, a burger joint! Here are some of the things that surprised us the most.
The care and attention that goes into Hopdoddy’s food belies it’s casual vibe. They bake their own burger buns right there, multiple times a day as needed. They grind their own beef that comes from humanely-raised cows that have not been given growth hormones or antibiotics. The meat is loosely packed which is what’s recommended, yielding a more tender burger. They buy local whenever possible. All of their proteins are ground including what you might not expect – the tuna in the Ahi Tuna Burger ($12.50) that uses sushi-grade tuna, sprouts, nori chips, teriyaki, honey wasabi mayo and other goodies. I’ve heard people rave about their black bean burger, the La Bandita ($9), with avocado, goat cheese, arugula, cilantro pesto and chipotle mayo, saying it made vegetarian burger-converts out of them. You can swap out any kind of patty in any kind of burger. They have monthly food, drink and shake specials to let the kitchen staff exercise their creativity and to let the diners try something new.
Otherwise, the offerings are the same and people come to have their favorites they refuse to stray from. Hopdoddy makes their own limoncello, infused St. Germain, and Triple Sec. They serve Colorado beers on tap and carry as many Colorado spirits as possible. Side note – I’ve talked to people from other “chain” restaurants who are excited to be in Colorado but when I ask them what Colorado beer, wine and spirits they carry, they act surprised and list only a few. What’s up with that?! It wouldn’t be a burger place without milkshakes, now, would it? Flavors include Caramel & Sea salt, Red Velvet Cake and Nutella & Chocolate Pretzel and cost $5.50/$6. Good news, adults, you can booze up any shake. Take their recommendations or ask for your liquor-of-choice to mix in. Hopdoddy has generously provided us with two cocktail recipes for what will be your go-to drinks for summer. Watch for that post very soon! I’ve been to Hopdoddy a few times now and, while I loved the lamb burger.
But my new favorite is the Primetime burger ($12). Made with Akaushi Beef (an alternative to Kobe said to have more flavor), the well-marbled beef patty is served with brie cheese (yes, totally works!), arugula, caramelized onions, truffle aioli, steak sauce and a beefsteak tomato. Onions, truffle and steak sauce could all become too intense and overwhelming, drowning each other out and not leaving that primo meat a fighting chance at all. But this burger was well-balanced, tender, full of flavor and just the right texture. We went truffle all the way and paired it with the truffle fries ($6.75) and, just to be over-the-top, the Chile Con Queso dip ($6.75). Talk to Hopdoddy’s General Manager at Denver’s only location, adjacent to Denver Union Station, and she, too, isn’t what you expect. Melissa Withem’s as funny and entertaining as she is pretty and bold. She attended school for fine art. Her parents were both good cooks who each had particular talents for different things in the kitchen.
