Premium takeaway start-up Deliveroo has opened a regional office in Edinburgh, where it launched this week. Regional Manager Caroline Hazlehurst explains more... We started about two years ago in London. The idea sprung from our chief executive Will Shu, who was working exhausting hours as an investment banker out in Canary Wharf, having newly transferred over from New York City. Trapped in the office until 3 am on a regular basis, he quickly found that London lacked the thriving 24/7 food delivery ecosystem he had been accustomed to in New York City, where you could order a huge variety of dishes. With no other options, he often resorted to Burger King, Chili’s or other greasy takeaways, not exactly ideal—particularly for Will, a passionate foodie. We want to make Edinburgh a massive success! It’s a huge foodie market with a buzzing environment and there are lots of good quality restaurants here. People are educated about their food and are really into stuff that’s locally-sourced.

As well as this, Edinburgh has a growing tech startup industry. We’ve grown very quickly, and now have a loyal customer base of over 100,000 across the UK, have partnered with over 1,500 restaurants, and have a fleet of over 800 drivers. About six months ago we started expanding in the regions and internationally, and are now in Paris, Berlin and Dublin. In the UK we’re in Brighton, Oxford, Cambridge, Reading, Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol, Nottingham, Liverpool and Leeds, and launched in Edinburgh and Glasgow on Monday 1 June. Deliveroo offers food delivery from premium restaurants that don’t traditionally offer a takeaway service. Aiming to modernise the way you dine, we deliver menu items from some of Edinburgh’s best-loved and most reputable restaurants, including the likes of Hanam's, Hakataya, and S. Luca Ice Cream. Until now, the quality of food, and the delivery experience, from online sites has been sub-par. Customer choice has been limited to restaurants that already provide a takeaway service, which have tended to be on the lower end of the scale – we’re committed to bringing people high-quality local cuisine from the places that they know and love.

People are educated about their food and are really into stuff that’s locally-sourced. As well as this, Edinburgh has a growing tech startup industry. Professionals ordering at home or working late are important customers for us too, so Edinburgh is a pretty exciting market and we can’t wait to get started! We plan to roll out in 25 additional towns and cities in the UK before the end of the year, as well as expanding further within Ireland, France and Germany.
