We decided to go to Asian Asia, Tyger Waterfront, as some of us had been there before and really enjoyed it. We phoned the smaller of the two Asian Asia’s in the complex and after hearing that they were not open, we went to the bigger Asian Asia restaurant, next to the Bossa Nova.
We ordered some al-you-can-eat sushi and really enjoyed the first couple of plates we had. After the 2nd round of ordering, my mate Richard spotted a bug-like thing moving inside the rice. We called our waiter over to have a look and he was so freaked out by the movement of this thing that he ran away from the table to call the manager/owner. The first guy that came over, presumably the manager came to have a look and against our requests, removed the plate from the table. They then brought the plate back – with the bug gone, and tried to tell us that it was merely a mosquito that sat on top of the rice – we could clearly see the thing was stuck inside, and it was not a mozzy. The waiter confirmed that they had to remove it from the rice – it did not just fly away. At this time, my friend Richard, who’s in the chef industry, told the waiter that he was not happy to pay the R139 for his all-you-can-eat dinner. I think most would agree that this is only fair after finding strange bugs in his sushi.
The waiter then ran this by the owners and they came over to the table, basically shouting at us, saying he has to pay. After a rowdy exchange of words, mostly from their side, they agreed that Richard would not have to pay, but then the waiter would have to foot the bill. With all-you-can-eat sushi, if you have extra pieces of sushi left over, you have to pay extra for them. Richard had a plate with four pieces left over and called the waiter to take it away. Fearing that he would have to pay extra for this as well, the waiter asked Richard to rather finish the sushi – which he then did. Or tried to, at least. The owner came rushing back, grabbed the piece of sushi our of Richard’s mouth and slammed the plate onto a table next to us. “You are done now“. The rest of us finished our food, paid and left. Upon paying the bill, we gave a number to the waiter and asked him to let us know if they make him pay Richard’s bill. Why should he be liable to pay? He only carried the food – the preparation thereof is not his responsibility and he should not be held accountable.
This morning, we received this text from the waiter: I absolutely cannot believe they made this poor guy pay the bill, AND then fired him. I kindly urge, or beg, you to NEVER go to Asian Asia in the Tyger Waterfront. People who treat customers and staff like this, do not deserve to run a business or to make any money off it. If one looks at the dirty state in which their tables are kept, one has to wonder what goes on in the kitchen. I am going to help the waiter with CCMA proceedings. Anyone with actual experience in this, feel free to email me if you can offer assistance. ** Fadia Arnold from TNK Attorneys have offered to assist the waiter with CCMA proceedings. *** I just got word that “Cools”, the waiter, went for an interview at @salushi and will begin training tomorrow (04-12-2014). Now I hope he works his socks off to impress them! If you’ve had similar experiences at the bigger Asian Asia, please tell me in the comments below. Drop a comment below or tweet me @thatWallace
