Sushi has created what it's calling the world's first flying server.No, it’s your dinner flying at you on what’s being billed as the world’s first flying tray and airborne delivery service. Japanese restaurant chain Yo! Sushi in London has developed a gadget called the iTray that delivers meals by gliding through the air and landing table-side for customers to then pluck off their plate. Piloted by servers who guide the iTrays from an iPad controller at a short distance, the lightweight, carbon fiber device can travel at speeds of up to 40 km/hr and has a range of 50 meters, reports Sky News. The marketing gimmick, which is being trialed at the chain’s flagship store in Soho, London, is to promote the restaurant’s newest product, the Yo! Burger, a Japanese-inspired sandwich that replaces buns with toasted Japanese rice and a hamburger patty with chicken, salmon, prawn, fish or tofu. “It was like something out of a science fiction novel,” says a customer in a video demonstration of the “world’s first flying waiter.”

Sushi is known for its conveyor-built self-service system. If successful, the iTray system could be rolled out across the UK in 2014, says Sky News. Meanwhile, restaurants in Asia are light years ahead when it comes to automated service, with many replacing waiters with robots, and chefs with automated noodle slicers and ramen line cooks.
