At its best, this colorful Korean dish of meat and sauteed and pickled vegetables atop a bowl of rice is a gustatory circus of contrasting textures and flavors.
Even a workaday rendition is better than most alternatives. The bibimbap at The Bulgogi Korean Grill, a pleasant year-old spot on Northeast Sandy Boulevard, falls into that workaday category, but if my office were within walking distance, I'd probably be there weekly. The chow: The Bulgogi is named for Korean grilled marinated beef, so it's no surprise that the restaurant's beef bibimbap ($10) is dominated by a healthy portion of chewy slices of sweet steak. That's not a complaint -- the meat is really excellent. If you're very hungry, an even larger portion with a side salad and a pair of deep-fried pork dumplings runs $12. The beef bulgogi is also offered as a "burger" on a bun with kimchi and fries on the side ($9). The spicy chicken bulgogi ($10, $9 as bibimbap) is also well seared and fiery, but sweeter than I like. The kimchi mandu (dumplings, $5) have a good, spicy filling but would be better pan-seared than deep-fried. Real deals: I didn't try the bulgogi fries ($6), but absolutely would have if I'd had a few pints at the Moon and Sixpence before dropping in.
