The Ann Arbor man's previous career was in computer science, working for a pharmaceutical company. Now he greets customers and serves bento boxes at Umi Sushi, which opened last week. The new restaurant is in Plymouth Green Crossings, next to the recently opened Sweetwaters Coffee & Tea. The 1,600-square-foot space has seating for about 45. It's decorated in warm yellow, brown and orange tones, and has a sushi bar in the back. "There are many sushi restaurants in Ann Arbor, mostly downtown," Kim said.
"This one is close to the highway, and there are not other sushi restaurants nearby." Qdoba Mexican Grill opens at Upland Green Peter Shipman's third area Qdoba Mexican Grill opened Thursday. The restaurant is in Upland Green, a mixed-use center near Plymouth Road and Upland Drive. The restaurant's menu is standard Qdoba - fresh, made-to-order burritos, tacos, quesadillas and salads. Qdoba also serves tortilla soup and gumbo that Shipman calls stellar. The new spot has seating for roughly 75, with lots of booths. Patio seating will be available in the summer. Lebanese-style Middle Eastern restaurant Express Shish Kabob will take over the former Banh Na Thai eatery at 4387 Washtenaw Ave. in Ann Arbor. It will be the second location for Express Shish Kabob, which has a restaurant in Lincoln Park. Stout Irish Pub gets OK to expand patio Stout Irish Pub owner Mike Abrams was given conditional site plan approval by the Brighton City Planning Commission this week to expand the outdoor patio area by using some Downtown Development Authority property behind the pub at 125 E. Grand River Ave., near North Street. The site plan still must go before the City Council for approval. Abrams said he wants to create a "family-friendly" atmosphere with a tiki bar motif. Live music would only be allowed until 10 p.m., and on specified days. Abrams hopes to open the new patio area sometime this spring.
