Calpis era uma dessas bebidas que eu não tinha coragem de experimentar, nem quando estive no Japão. Com a aparência de água clorada, e sem conseguir ler uma mísera palavra além da marca, foi muito fácil fantasiar que se tratava de algo terrível disfarçado numa embalagem fofa. Mas em alguma tarde do ano passado, a Tatu Damberg comentou que era gostoso. Ah, era o empurrãozinho que a minha curiosidade precisava. Aqui em São Paulo encontramos nas versões Calpis Water (que já vem diluído e pronto para beber), Calpis Soda (versão com gás) e em diversos sabores como pêssego, lichia, aloe vera, uva verde e morango. O meu favorito e o básico, sem sabores ou gás. Lá do outro lado do mundo existem outros produtos como manteiga Calpis e versões álcoolicas. A novidade é que foi lançada uma versão em latinha (R$2,50) com informações em português, importada e distribuída pela Ajinomoto e que apareceu em alguns supermercados. O sabor me pareceu mais fraco, um pouco mais aguado do que a versão que vem “direto” do Japão.

Calpis foi lançado em 1917 no Japão e quando chegou aos Estados Unidos, em 1991, deu origem à fofoca de que foi preciso fazer um pequeno ajuste no nome da marca. Calpis em inglês soava como… bom, fale alto umas duas vezes e você vai entender: cow piss. Daí a marca foi lançada como Calpico… Mas não tenha medo, para quem ama Yakult eu diria que Calpis é quase o sonho realizado de ter em mãos mais de 80g de leite fermentado, doce e levemente cítrico. Quase porque eles são semelhantes e não idênticos. Acho mais leve, menos doce e vem em embalagens de 500ml – e com a vantagem de não precisar de refrigeração, o que ajudou a popularizar a bebida no Japão. Espero que seja lançado um site tão completo quanto o japonês – que tem todas as embalagens lançadas, a história e muitas receitas – inclusive de pratos. Good product help to save a lot of time. Idea is great and it does cool good rice. But I found it takes longer in the microwave, esp if you're doing veggies in it, than stove top cooking. Hence losing one star. Good on standard normal rice, bit hit and miss on wild rice... but maybe it's just a matter of getting used to it and finding the right timings/water amount.
