Alright, one last road post and then you're safe for a bit. This isn't really the road trip time of year, after all. After a somewhat disappointing hike around Cape Perpetua (Thor's Well wasn't being very impressive even at high tide, and the youngest member of our entourage tripped on a downhill trail and shredded both her knees), we dropped Miss Golden Rule back at the hotel to relax and listen to the Ocean. Meanwhile, her kid and I went in search of sustenance. After a quick stop at Walgreens for first aid supplies, of course. Across the Yaquina Bay Bridge from Newport is a little unincorporated area known as South Beach, which is where you can find the South Beach Fish Market. Don't kill yourself plugging it into your GPS, the signage makes it very hard to miss. The Market has a little something for everyone. It's connected to a convenience store where you can get the usual overpriced beer, cigarettes, soda, condoms, chips, single serving beef sticks, etc. The fish market, while small, is very well stocked.

Whether you're in the mood for fresh seafood, smoked seafood, seafood cocktails, canned seafood, gift baskets, whatever, they've got you covered. Most importantly, for my purposes at least, they also have a deli setup running. You can get anything from a simple batch of fish and chips to a whole Dungeness crab, which they steam out in front of the store.

What kind it is, I'm not terribly sure. They don't just have a generic fish and chips. They have sea bass, ling cod, albacore, halibut, and king salmon. It didn't really matter, the kid liked it whatever it was. Because I'm me, I ordered the Captain's Platter, which is the most expensive of the non-crab options. It comes with two chunks of halibut, two prawns, two oysters, and two scallops.

sushi kan ottawa deliveryEverything save for the fries was battered, and of course all of it was fried. That being said, everything was absolutely delicious. The halibut was flaky, the scallops tender, the oysters succulent, and the prawns were bigger than I would have expected. Even the fries, which were of the previously frozen crinkle cut variety, were perfectly golden and crispy.

You'll get tarter and/or cocktail sauce, depending on what your order. There are also conveniently located bottles of malt vinegar and ketchup. It took a few trips to Newport to find my groove when it comes to seafood. I've had some overpriced and underwhelming meals. South Beach Fish Market is definitely one I recommend, as long as you can handle the grease. This is the kind of stuff that would go great with a beer (I wonder if you can grab one from next door if you're eating in), but it's pretty damned good for an impromptu picnic on one of the benches outside as well. They have surprisingly generous hours which they aren't great about publicizing, so you should probably call in advance because they might change depending on the time of year. Food: Fresh and delicious. Value: You wouldn't think seafood would cost so much, especially at the Coast. Service: Counter service, but everyone was friendly during the ninety seconds I dealt with them. Atmosphere: It's a seafood market/convenience store and deli.

Light years away from the tourist spots at the Bayfront or Nye Beach. This is the kind of place locals eat, and of course those of us who do our homework. Simply put, Allen Iverson is the uncommon thread. The Virginia native brought cornrows, tats and headbands to the NBA. He brought style, attitude and hip-hop to the league. It is a fact that The Boss has permanently etched his influence on skateboarding and its culture. He has shared his creative vision through his life both on and off the board.Hello and welcome to Vacuum Sealer Digest. But, there is also a downside to them – none of them can preserve food products for more than a few days at most. In that respect, a good vacuum sealer becomes extremely indispensable whenever or wherever there is a need to store food and ration for a longer period without affecting it’s quality. A vacuum sealer suctions all the air (and with it the moisture) out of the food storage pouch or canning jar, and seals the opening shut. No oxygen and moisture around food means the problem of microbes, mold, mildew or insect infestation for that matter is nipped from the bud. As a result, you are left with neatly packaged food with nearly five times the normal shelf life. Furthermore, storing the same in a freezer will ensure that the sub-zero temperatures slow down enzyme action taking place inside perishables, thereby keeping them fresh for months. But, more importantly, vacuum sealed food don’t suffer from freezer burn and this is something that will be much appreciated by those who like the idea of storing frozen meat, poultry and fish in bulk quantities.

In fact, it takes much less time to marinade meat and fish by vacuum sealing them as opposed to keeping them refrigerated overnight. But, it not just food that vacuum sealers help preserve. Certain models may also be used for wrapping letters, magazines, artifacts, linens, and many other household items that need protection from dust and humidity. There’s practically a vacuum sealer for every preservation need out there in the market today. What’s required however is the acumen to understand your needs before purchasing one. Vacuum sealers are an excellent concept. You buy food in bulk and separate the portions that you’ll need for now. The rest can be vacuum sealed and stored away in their respective storage spaces for future use. But, things like frequency of use, diversity of products (edible or non-edible) being packed or convenience attributes associated with different models are just some of the pre-purchase considerations you’ll need to account for beforehand. In that respect, the multitude of vacuum sealer reviews and how-to guides found here should help you understand the strong points of each model based on the parameters mentioned above.

From a functional point of view, vacuum sealers can be broadly categorized into chamber, clamp or retractable nozzle type. This classification is based on how they go about drawing out the air from the containing medium and sealing the package thereafter. The fastest in terms of operation out of the three, these vacuum sealers require the food product to be placed within the containment chamber of the appliance to create an effective vacuum and double seal the package soon after. But, they are also very expensive and therefore mostly used within commercial food packaging circles. Best for: Heavy duty applications, commercial packaging, frequent use in homes. Pros: Fast operation, equally effective for dry and wet packaging, come with pressure gauge. Cons: Expensive, heavy and take up a lot of space. Featuring an external clamp design, these vacuum sealers require bags with specially textured channels on the inside to suck the air out. The appliance works by clamping down on the bag to first suction the air for a few seconds before impulse-heating the opening to create an impermeable seal.
