It’s another sushi restaurant in an expat populous targeting penny pinchers.

We skipped the weekday lunch set (RMB58/65) in favor of beef tongue with lemon vinegar (RMB55). The springy thin slices were well-seasoned with pepper and soy but could have been even more enjoyable served over rice; for the portion size, we thought it was slightly overpriced. Their thick cuts of salmon sashimi (RMB45) were fresh and well thawed, but the eel nigiri (RMB18) had a sour aftertaste. More disappointing still was the chicken chirashi (RMB35), a wet omelette of chicken and onions over rice that lacked flavor. We added the lemon vinegar that came with the beef tongue to cure the bland dish. Have you ever ordered a dish only to question whether that was really what you requested when it arrives at your table? The avocado tuna roll (RMB60) was misleadingly advertised as sushi consisting of mainly avocado and tuna. The portion was huge, and though it didn’t taste bad -- mediocre at best -- the sushi had barely a micro-millimeter shaving of avocado hidden beneath the tuna slice.

Also, a chunk of apple took up most of the space where the non-spicy “spicy tuna” should have filled, leaving us to question if this was a cheap ploy to save a few cents. For certain, this sushi needs to be renamed. The accommodating service is this place’s saving grace. The food is good enough to make you feel full. Our guess is that the lunch crowd from nearby apartment complexes are taking advantage of this not-Sushi’O venue since Sushi Abuse closed. If you’re in the area and looking for a cheap lunch deal, California Rolls will do. Still, we wouldn’t suggest using it as a starting point to impress your friends.
