Wherever you fall on the sushi spectrum, you've stumbled upon this delicious list for a reason: to find CNY restaurants offering reliably delicious sushi in a cozy, cool atmosphere. This list emphasizes local joints, so you won't see chains (Koto) or grocery sushi (Wegmans) here. We know sushi isn't for everyone. Though sushi is the star, the Kyoko menu offers teriyaki, noodle dinners and interesting appetizers. Take your pick from more authentic apps over your regular edamame and dumplings. Kyoko offers yakitori (charbroiled, skewered teriyaki chicken) and okanomiyaki (a Japanese-style pancake with octopus).

Tucked behind Carol's Polar Parlor, it's easy to miss Nikkou while driving up West Genesee Street. When I visited earlier this month, the small, angular dining room was empty -- never a good sign. But by the dinner's end, almost a dozen people called or stopped in to pick up a take-out order. Although Nikkou opened in October, the take-out business appears to be thriving. The West Genesee roll (shrimp tempura and cream cheese topped with spicy crab meat and shrimp) may a bit heavy-handed with spicy mayo, but you can always ask for it on the side. Nikkou also serves grilled chicken, tofu and seafood, with rice/noodle sides and a variety of sauces. Edit: We have confirmed Nikkou is now closed and will reopen under new management in early January 2015 as Yume Asian Bistro with Japanese, Chinese and Thai cuisine.
