Dead Sushi (デッド寿司 Deddo sushi?) is a 2012 Japanese comedy horror film directed by Noboru Iguchi. The film involves Keiko (Rina Takeda) who is the daughter of a famous sushi chef. She leaves home for an inn where she is bullied by the president of Komatsu Pharmaceuticals. A Komatsu researcher arrives intent on revenge by creating a serum that turns fish on rice into killer sushi. Keiko teams up with the former sushi chef Sawada to fight off the creatures. Director and writer Noboru Iguchi decided to work on a film after the film Piranha 3D (2010) was popular in Japan. Iguchi was also influenced by the film Attack of the Killer Tomatoes by the idea of food attacking people.[1] The film contains a number of action sequences which Iguchi said he wanted to be more comedic than his previous films.[1] Yoshihiro Nishimura contributed to the special effects in the film. Dead Sushi is the first film to be released from Walker Pictures, the new producing and distribution offshoot of the Japanese talent agency Office Walker.

Dead Sushi had its world premiere at the Fantasia Festival on July 22, 2012. In a review for Dead Sushi and Zombie Ass: Toilet of the Dead, horror magazine Fangoria gave the film a 2 and a half rating out of four, stating that the film "kind of defy ratings; obviously they’re not high art, and the serious critic in me believes the score below is appropriate for these slight, outrageous confections. Yet they’re also diverting, raucous fun when seen in the company of like-minded viewers, so that rating can be augmented by half a skull (or more) if you’re able to watch these movies with a group".[2] Variety gave the film a mixed review, noting that "the comic dialogue lacks zing and most perfs are pitched too high even for this type of nonsense, Takeda tones it down nicely and impressively kicks the butts of sleazy corporate types and seafood. other tech work is passable." ^ a b cIf splattery Japanese weirdness is what you're into, there's no denying that this flick delivers the goods, and then some.

Karate Girl cutie, Rina Takeda, batters raw fish in Dead Sushi, the latest over-the-top splatter flick by Japanese cult director Noboru Iguchi (Machine Girl, Mutant Girl Squad, TOMIE: Unlimited). Dead Sushi is the debut film from the new Japanese production company, Walker Pictures which gets its world premiere on Sunday, 22nd July 2012 at 19.30 at the Montreal Fantasia International Film Festival, one of the largest and most influential genre film festivals in the world. This will be followed by the Asia premiere that will be held in Korea on 26th and 27th July at the Puchon Fantastic Film Festival. Both Iguchi and Takeda will be making a personal appearance at the said events. Unfortunately they will not be attending the UK premiere which will take place (or should that be ‘plaice’) at midnight on August 26th at the Film4 FrightFest in London, at the Empire Cinema in Leicester Square. Complicating matters is the arrival of a group of employees from Komatsu Pharmaceutical there to sample the inn’s famous specialty sushi. Following them in pursuit of revenge is Yamada (Kentaro Shimazu), a medical researcher betrayed by the Komatsu president. Disgruntled and seeking revenge, Yamada injects the hotel sushi with a drug that not only brings it to life, but also turns it into ferocious, bloodthirsty killers! Right away, the reanimated sushi begins to kill off the hotel guests. Fatty tuna chews into human tongues; flesh-hungry salmon roe leaps about with gnashing fangs; and the sashimi pieces laid across the bodies of beautiful, semi-nude women devour them before the eyes of the stunned guests.

Panic ensues as the sushi multiplies, infecting humans and turning them into zombie-like creatures. Fighting back with the assistance of the inn’s disgraced former sushi chef Sawada (Shigeru Matsuzaki), Keiko turns her kung fu on the flying killers.
