"First off, they do not take reservations during happy hour. We were trying to schedule a party of 15 for 6:00 but they did not allow that at happy hour. We ended up switching the time to 7:00. "My coworker and I came here for lunch one day because we tried to go to Chuy's but the wait was too ridiculous. Quite the opposite that we ended up here, but I'm SO GLAD we came here instead! "Don't get the Ras Malai. I saw the girl pull the box of store bought ones out of the freezer of and place them in the to-go container. The "Oh My God Bar" is good to go and hella delicious. “I was first introduced to sushi at Nippon (which was later replaced by Nara on Westheimer) more than 15 years ago by my Japanese friend.” “I am not a big fan of Miso soup, however, this was delicious.” “Parking is cramped because there is so much retail in that plaza but they share valet with Cova during dinner hours.” "I would give this 4.5 stars if yelp gave 1/2's. "An unexpected GEM in the energy corridor! My husband and I enjoy sampling restaurants "via happy hour" before we dive right in. umi sushi menu toms riverWe cautiously walked in without any expectation as to not be disappointed. I came with a colleague for a working lunch, just before the rush. Seating was quick, staff friendly, noise level tolerable. We ordered standard sushi combo and a couple of skewers: duck in bacon wrap and black cod. They took time coming! The sushi and duck were mediocre, but the black cod was excellent. The other ratings are quite correct... Nice place, good food and presentation of the sushi is to try all the menu, i just missed spicy edamames, not available in general good place Wide selection of special rolls: caterpillar, crunchy etc. They also have beef on the hot stone (you grill it yourself!) Can be busy in the evenings - make a reservation.
Cozy, but a little noisy. Good sushi and always fresh. Rolls are creative but not as creative or flavorful as MF or Kata so don't rank it as highly. We've been going there for years though so perhaps we just need an update. Love their good sized servings of sashimi. I was looking forward to trying this place. The shrimp tempura were outstanding and the atmosphere is really nice. Unfortunately the sushi was forgettable, but the biggest problem was the truly awful service. There were not many customers, but even though they had quite a few people working the sushi bar the waiters were scarce and offhand. This is a solid sushi restaurant for those not wanting to venture too far from the Rice/West U area. I come here every time I'm wanting sushi during the week. I've only had one bad thing that stood out in my mind, and that's the mochi--absolutely terribly freezer-burned. Otherwise, I gravitate toward the sashimi and specialty grill items. The food is good, the service was very good.
The menu is quite extensive, but this can be good or bad. In some ways, such a large menu makes ordering a bit confusing. Overall, this was a good experience. Easy access and plenty of parking in the back or on the side streets. This Azuma is better than the one downtown. The Red devil roll is very good. The Temura Udon soup really tasty. I love the hot-rock beef. There's just something cool about cooking you meat on a rock. The Mochi ice cream tops off your meal. We come here frequently and there is a good reason why it's good! The sushi was pretty good but the place smelled bad. The noodles barely had any chicken and the chicken had a lot skin and fat on it. I would not personally come back as there are better places for the price. This has been a favorite for my wife and I and now that are kids are older (5 and 9) they have some favorites too like the beef hot rock which they love to cook themselves. My son is also starting to gobblle up the excellent sushi, especially the rolls with some fruit.
