You either love or hate sushi. It is raw fish after all and maybe not to everyone's taste but if like me you are passionate about it and would eat it every single day of the week, then this is the list for you. I've written about sushi a few times in Dublin and this list has always been one of the most requested but the truth is finding 10 great spots to fill it with and making sure the content was top notch is way harder than other lists. What struck me most was that there is a serious need for better sushi in the capital. Something a little higher end because the punters are clearly willing to pay for it. Don't ever get stuck for great sushi again with these top 10 places to eat sushi in Dublin…I always tend to think of this place as somewhere to go and get really drunk, sing karaoke and eat bento boxes. If you do come during the day they have some wonderful sushi with very unusual toppings. Either upstairs or down in the basement you will get some awesome sushi. Huge team of chefs make it upstairs along with great dumplings and other Asian treats.
Over on Liffey Street Street this is a super little Sushi spot that has a big focus on takeaway. They are a big UK chain with outlets in Dundrum and just beside Brown Thomas in town. Although we'd always champion the independent in Dublin, you have to say that their sushi is well worth making the list. Pick what you want from conveyor belts but do watch what you eat as you can easily tally up a huge bill in here. The good news is that their sushi is awesome and perfect for a lunchtime snack. The first of two sister restaurants on the list (They also own Mushasi) and a great new addition to Camden Street. Really good value for the food and when you add in the ability to BYOB this is one of the best places for a cheap night out and heaps of gorgeous sushi. If anything this shows just how popular sushi is becoming in Dublin. Located on Capel Street (which is fast becoming one of the best streets in Dublin for food options) this is a brilliant spot to get quality and really affordable sushi. While most places make you feel like you need a mortgage to eat there and you choose dishes based on price that isn't the case here. Don’t be fooled into thinking this is a ‘members only’ affair as the Society has happily flung open its doors far and wide so that anyone can rock up and enjoy what’s on offer.
Since the recent refurb they’ve tucked the members bar on the top floor of the Society but there’s a lovely new bar downstairs and a dining room on the first floor that we were welcomed to discover. Tasting menu ordered now the only decision we had to make was whether to match our food with whisky or wine. I love that whisky matches brilliantly with food, it’s complexities mean it can be matched with literally anything. Having said that I  personally can’t contemplate drinking 5 or 6 cask strength whiskies in one evening. Potential for head spin the following day!  That being the case we wimped out and took a wee dram with our ‘bites’ and a full dram with dessert. The Scotch Malt Whisky Society may not immediately be on your radar for a dinner date but we hope that this might change your mind. Since relocating to the first floor The Dining Room has a lovely light airy feel about it and feels rather ‘grown up’ but in a good way. Service was polite and efficient with the exception of missing out on some bread which wasn’t offered until after the starters and only when we asked.
This didn’t bother me too much but Mr M likes to carb-load upfront so when it did arrive he scoffed 4 slices at once. Aside from the bread incident the whole evening went swimmingly and the service was great. Our charming French waiter chose some great wines to go with our food and the menu went a little bit like this…. Head chef James Freeman has put a great menu together. YO SUSHI TO GO! We quite like Japanese food at the Towers so imagine when Yo Sushi knocked on the door one day and offered up a HUGE takeaway so that we could sample their new #tokyotogo takeaway menu! Back of the net. With very little hesitation required we perused the menu ‘online’ and placed our order. Although unable to deliver (hrmph) we jumped in the Monkfish Motor and headed up to Harvey Nichols Yo Sushi to pick up the goodies. With Dominic Jack at the pass, Castle Terrace Edinburgh stands alone thanks to the innovative cuisine and the exceptional service. One of the kingpins of the Edinburgh fine-dining scene over the last few years, Castle Terrace continues to deliver exquisite dishes in its newly refurbed contemporary dining room at the foot of Edinburgh castle.
Part of the renowned Kitchin group, it stands alone thanks to the innovative food that chef Dominic Jack brings to the table. One of the best dining experiences we’ve ever had in Edinburgh. Dining at the newly opened Norn*(in the site of the old Plumed Horse) is incredible and a few hours of your life that you will savour for a very long time. With great consideration for ingredients, seasonality, and sourcing, and a focus on creativity Norn has a clear edge on other restaurants in town. Forget white tablecloths and hushed voices – the Rolling Stones are playing on the jukebox, the front of house have very cool moss linen aprons and you’ll get a visit from each of the chefs in the kitchen over the course of your meal. It feels young, different and very exciting. Enjoy the extremely reasonable 3 course lunch for £20 otherwise indulge yourself in the 4 or 7 course tasting menus (with the option of matching wines.
