Most large general Asian stores are Chinese-focused (e.g. Paristore in France), or Korean-focused (e.g. H-Mart in the U.S.). This means that they only have limited shelf space for Japanese food. Yes, there is a difference between the cuisines! For the best selection of Japanese groceries, go to the stores that are specified as being Japanese. (Two chains with supermarket-level stores are Mitsuwa and Marukai in the U.S. Seattle-area mini-chain Uwajimaya also has supermarket-sized stores.) Your second choice is Korean stores, who usually stock a large selection of Japanese foods.

Chinese focused groceries generally only carry a small selection of Japanese food, and may even carry pretending-to-be-Japanese-but-really not food (such as snacks with odd Japanese on them). The Japanese markets in Costa Mesa (Tokyo Central, formerly Marukai, and Mitsuwa) will have sashimi grade as well, but not on the way from SNA to LB. 2 destinations mentioned in this post I would think you would be better off just getting take out from a sushi place, where they would supply all of the fixins and utensils for you. Edited: 5:44 pm, May 04, 2015 IMO The BEST Seafood market in Coastal Orange County is Santa Monica Seafood in Costa Mesa -- On your way to Laguna Beach, just after you exit the 55 at 17th St and Newport Blvd., Costa Mesa. I know not to bring a wine bottle down the 40 stair-steps to the sand. -nuff said :) for a foodie that had to live on clear liquids (broth, hard candy and popsicles for ex) for nearly 6 months this is a big deal.

funny that the first thing I really wanted but couldn't get was spicy raw fish, wine and a sunset on the water!
