The service is very good and... The fish was so fresh, I have it a high rating. I had the sushi and sashimi combination. The freshness knock me off my feet. Probably the best sushi I've had outside of New York City, japanika Nobu. We decided to go for a lunch at a Japanese restaurant and we located Zento (a number are NOT open for lunch). As many times as we've stopped for lunch, this meal was excellent. We both had the lunch boxes (she got shrimp, I did not) and loved every bite.

Just walking down road we happened upon. Seated jn half the time we were quoted. Fully booked in a Friday night. Some people who came in after us got take out. Wine beer choices not extensive. I have driven by this unassuming place on a stretch of Washington St that is a restaurant wasteland and assumed it couldn't be much. Was I ever pleasantly surprised. The fish was very fresh, precisely cut and beautifully arranged....not at all like the ubiquitous supermarket sushi. The sashimi/chirashi selection was quite varied as well All in all a very... Did Happy Hour specials.good prices, seemed tasty, nothing really special about the specials. Needed to hang out in the bathroom within the hour......but maybe it was the post sushi ice cream? Our friends like this place but for someone who know sushi and I am not talking Jiro level, this place was disappointing. For those serious about sushi, try Sushi Yoshi in Vienna and compare. When tuna was too black, yes black, they took it back. The place is run by Thais and they are very nice. Favorite sushi restaurant in Alexandria. Small, friendly, efficient, and delicious. We have tried almost all the sushi in the Old Town area and ZENTO is by far our favorite for service, food quality, and value. I've been to this restaurants on several occasions and never came away disappointed. It is a relatively small restaurant, with limited seating, but the food and service are both on point. They have a large variety of sushi rolls with big bold flavors as well as traditional Japanese dishes that are quite authentic and tasty.

The portions were large and they gave a side or noodles, which were actually fine. My kids refused to eat the mushrooms and broccoli in the vegetable medley, both items they generally enjoy at a Japanese restaurant. They had never been to that type of restaurant before and it was a big success. The tepanayki/hibachi section was busy so there was a lot going on for the kids to see. The food was just what you expect - ample serving size and good, but not great, taste. It's the show we went for, and we were not disappointed. All the classics were there -- the fireball, the flipping food morsels into diners' mouths, the onion volcano, etc. If you are looking for a fun family dinner out this is a good place.
