Amongst my explorations of Jerusalem, I not only found myself walking through the street where the Prime Minister’s residence is, but I’ve discovered a neighborhood full of young artists, creative minds, hipsters, Jerusalemites, and even elderly who have such love for Rehavia, they never really left.

Best Place to Eat in Rehavia: Café Yehoshua Though not Kosher, this café is a place to eat a classic Israeli breakfast, serves as a diner throughout the day where people are on their laptops studying for exams or having business meetings, and at night becomes a bar where the locals gather. What makes this café interesting is the range of people that come and visit this area, from students, to elder women, to Jewish moms. You may also notice some politicians and media reporters from Channel 1 and 2 enjoying coffee and being treated like locals. Best thing on the menu: Gnocchi Bolognese and (if you’re so inclined) Shrimp and Almond Rice! Best Place to Relax and Unwind: Rehavia Book Store, this bookstore has been open for twelve years and truly represents how this neighborhood has changed from one generation to the next. Inside you might find a young literature lover walking into the bookstore seeking the next American romance novel, while an elderly woman from South Africa will walk in asking for a better version of the English-Hebrew dictionary.

Not your average bookstore, the shop offers both new and used books, in English and Hebrew alike. Drop in, spend an hour exploring shelf by shelf, and you’re sure to leave with that warm, homey feeling. Other places to check out in the neighborhood: Café de Paris, Sushi Rehavia, Mitudela Ice Cream Shop and Azza 40! Why the locals are here to stay: Ido: “This place is full of special magic and the doors are always open for strangers. It’s an area with so much to offer.” Noga: “The city has gone under my skin, it’s a place full of love between people and the communication that occurs between strangers is special.” I didn’t think a neighborhood could have so much character, until I fell in love with the streets of Rehavia. My advice: take a walk through the neighborhoods of Jerusalem and open your eyes, take an occasional break from the city center and you will notice a sense of community that is felt as an elderly woman walks into a bookstore and the owner already knows her taste of books or as a waiter already knows what a local will order from the menu.

Their seating area is a small, semi-enclosed area just off the sidewalk. They have four tables which seat from 3-6 people each and there is also a raised counter off to the side with bar stools for four people. So altogether the seating area is quite limited.
sushi kan ottawa merivale menu It was clear that a lot of Tommy’s business comes from phone-in orders and take-away as I saw them receiving the orders as I stood at the counter.
maiko sushi menu ddo Tommy’s is located in a quiet section of Rechavia on Keren Hakayemet St. and so there doesn’t see to be a lot of traffic noise. The food at Tommy’s is definitely pretty good for its category – kosher mehadrin fast food. They have some very tasty appetizers like the “Buffalo” chicken wings (21 NIS) and the crispy fried chicken nuggets (32 NIS) among others.

I ordered the 300 gram Classic Hamburger (36 NIS) with tomatoes, lettuce, pickles and red onions. All in all, it was quite flavorful. The meat was juicy and flavorful, and the vegetables that they put both above and below the meat patty accented the meat really well. I want to note that the meat in this burger seems to be mixed with other ingredients, but they do have a Steak Burger which looks to be pure beef (see images below). The fries that I ordered on the side were very mediocre. My friend also ordered the Classic Hamburger as a meal with onion rings (55 NIS). Meals are served with one side dish (fries, onion rings or a small salad) and lemonade. Tommy’s offers salads with your choice of meat: grilled or crispy chicken or sliced steak. The grilled chicken salad (36 NIS) comes with a bed of lettuce, fresh vegetables and sweet pecans and there are a variety of salad dressings you can choose from. The crispy chicken salad comes with lettuce, fresh vegetables, and sweet potatoes.

The chicken comes in the form of fried, crispy chicken nuggets (36 NIS). Tommy’s menu has several different sandwiches options including marinated chicken breast, steak, crispy chicken and even a vegetarian sandwich with grilled tofu, red pepper coullie (sauce) and fresh vegetables. You can choose to have your sandwich made with either a French sourdough baguette or in a wrap. When I arrived at Tommy’s at around 7:30PM on a Thursday night, the staff was overwhelmed with orders. They were filling many call-in orders as well as trying to field orders from the counter. They were obviously understaffed for such peak hours. We had to wait around 15 minutes to make our order and then it took about 10 minutes for our order to be prepared. After we received our meals, I could see that the onslaught of orders let up. I saw that the majority of the customers during that peak hour were yeshiva students. There must be an English speaking yeshiva in the area and Thursday night must be the time they go out for hamburgers.
