Every conversation these days tends to begin and end with the soap opera that is Brexit, but somehow, amazingly, life carries on. For those who might welcome a small distraction from the furore, a positive, sustainable, inclusive new brand has been quietly setting up shop. Inspired by diverse cultural identities, Maison Numen is a refreshing change indeed from prevailing politics. Just launched at Somerset House, Maison Numen is a new global portal to the hidden talent of craftspeople from the far corners of the world. With sustainable values at its core, it is a venture that seeks out objects from the most remote communities around the globe, celebrating their aesthetic alongside their stories. Through lengthy editorials and film documentaries, great care is taken to explain the ancestral, practical and cultural sides of each piece as well as the traditional methods of making and manufacture. Maison Numen’s founders, Jessica Macias and Ana Caufman, have been working on the concept for almost three years.

“It was an idea I had while I was travelling around,” says Macias, who following a career in international finance in Caracas and New York had begun to pursue a more cultural path, joining the board at Centre Pompidou and taking on select interior design projects.

As work goes, it doesn’t sound half bad. “We've started our first collection focusing on products from Latin America, and of course we have to meet all the makers in person and see them in action, watch how they work,” explains Caufman. “Direct human contact makes all the difference here, and it’s very important to us that they match with our concept and values. Then we document the entire process through video and writing, we take our time.” The pair are looking for products that tell a story about their culture and use traditional methods and materials, but also it’s vital that the process and the materials used are fully fair trade and sustainable. Their first collection, Latin Animae Vol 1, comprises 193 pieces from 35 designers and artisans across Venezuela, Mexico, Guatemala, Peru and Colombia. Caufman talks passionately of meeting the women weavers in Mexico who work with backstrap looms – looms that are tied around their waists while the weaving is carried out seated on the ground: “It’s almost as if they are giving birth to the textile,” she says. “

And it sounds as though they are chanting – although in fact they are counting the threads – and it’s so incredible to watch.” Macias tells the story of The Yanomami people, who have long been recognised as one of the least Westernised indigenous groups in South America. “The Yanomami are renowned for their unique way of life, along the Upper Orinoco River in the Venezuelan Amazon,” she explains. “They have a very distinctive social structure and using grasses and vines from the surrounding jungle they make some of the most beautiful baskets I have ever seen in my life. Not all the works are indigenous – many pieces in Maison Numen’s collection are simply ingenious. In another example, Studio David Pompa has worked with the artisans of San Bartolo Coyotepec to create a series of ultra simple tableware from the famous Barro Negro of Oaxaca – a type of clay which lends the ceramics their deep black tone. The designer, David Pompa Alarcon, grew up between Mexico and Austria before studying product design in London.

Today he works closely with Mexican artisans, drawing upon their vast reserves of cultural knowledge and expert practice to create new pieces. Macias and Caufman are currently working on their next collection, which will collate pieces from around Europe. “We’ve been traveling around England too, and have especially impressed with the ceramics and pottery here,” says Caufman. And that’s the beauty of the platform – whether it is a one-off piece from Wahaca, a designer plucked from the graduate shows of a European design school, or a new take on old English pottery, it doesn’t matter – the important thing is that the products are an opportunity to discover and relate to objects in a more meaningful way. Caufman and Macias believe in celebrating cultural differences through craft more than anything. “Through Maison Numen we want to harness the connectivity among human beings and help create a truly global community,” says Caufman.
