If that isn’t enough to captivate you, our waitress, Lauren, informed us they’re named “Mexican Sugar” because Mexican (Cane) sugar is added to 70% of their cocktails/dishes & due to their large inventory of Mexican sodas.

They call it “sultry Mexican comfort” and define it as “a smart stylish hacienda design meets the definitive southwest Tequila Library.” Due to this once you enter Mexican Sugar your eyes drift to the heart of the restaurant, the elongated bar.

The restaurant & bar feature a collection of furniture & decor that looks like it was swept up at an array of Highland Park garage sales. For our starter dish we ordered a classic: guacamole and salsa, both of which exceeded my expectations. The guacamole was simple as far as key ingredients are concerned but they still managed to pack this small dish with ample flavor. I am an avid fan of onions but I feel many restaurants overpower their guac with too many-not Mexican Sugar; the ratio is spot on. I also appreciate the accompanying lime for that extra squirt of flavor & freshness. Their salsa is one of my new favorites next to Chuy’s. You can taste the roasted chile (as well as see it in the deeper red color) & the grilled flavors marinating into one. It is served cold and packs a small kick-the temperatures offset one another effortlessly. For our brunch refreshment we ordered the La Marca Prosecco, my favorite sparkling wine. It features a vibrant bouquet of apple, white peach, and honeysuckle.

The tray comes with four freshly squeezed juices for your selection: mango, guava, orange, and grapefruit. My juice of choice was grapefruit and hers was mango. The set also includes two petite bowls of fresh fruit (mango, pineapple, orange, & grapefruit) for your beverages accompaniment…and a flower! We perused the menu as we ate the whole basket of chips and sipped our bubbles. We knew we had to make a choice eventually. The first dish ordered was the “Hamburguesa” (I am beginning to see I order unconventional items at theme specific restaurants). Skirt grind, chile bacon, roasted poblano, Oaxaca cheese, tomato, bibb lettuce, pickled jalapenos, and avocado spread; with a description like such who could refuse? We ordered it medium. Notable mention: their housemade spicy ketchup was all my lunch date could talk about, it was divine. This picture does not do this “hamburguesa” justice-particularly in size. Once bitten into, the first thing I sensed was the taste of the grilled, smoky meat.

While the flavor of the patty was bold and oh-so-welcomed, it was not overpowering! Next on the palate was the roasted poblano, then the chile bacon. My taste-buds were satisfied as I chewed slowly immersing in each spice, each ingredient, each flavor. The bun was light, airy, and fresh-it appears thick but gives in under your grasp like angel food cake. The second dish ordered was the “Huevos y Chorizo Enchiladas”, three hand pressed house-made tortillas generously filled with spicy chorizo, topped with red chile salsa, and two sunny-side-up eggs with a side of brunch potatoes & a cup of fresh fruit. Now, these are not for the faint of tongue heart, the spice level on these will make even me reach for a glass of water. Do not let this deter you from ordering this dish though, ask for the sauce on the side or for an alternative option. With that said, similar to my Hamburguesa, the flavors on the plate were euphoric. I went into the outer enchilada with my fork in my right hand and my knife in the left.
