As prices for yellowfin continue to increase, all in the sector are looking to the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC) meeting in La Reunion at the end of May. Measures to reduce fishing on yellowfin will be discussed at the meeting. The WWF, big retailers and tuna brands -- including Princes, John West, Tesco, J. Sainsbury, Marks and Spencer, Waitrose and Asda -- are calling on the IOTC to cut yellowfin catches by 20% and introduce harvest control rules to ensure the sustainability of all stocks, including skipjack. This came a few days before it was revealed the Marine Stewardship Council certificate for the Maldives pole and line yellowfin fishery in the Indian Ocean had been suspended.
Although this is not yet proving to be a factor influencing prices, a cut would have the likely impact of a further increase, the tuna sector executive, who preferred not to be quoted by name, said, during the Brussels seafood show. “It’s not clear if they will agree on how to cut catches or yellowfin, without impacting skipjack,” which nobody wants, he said.jiro dreams of sushi kijken The prices for yellowfin raw material for canning in Spain are now around €2,525- €2,550/t, the source said. sushi in suhl watch onlinePricing for raw material for steaks is slightly higher at €2,600/t-€2,700/t.genki sushi menu kauai While skipjack prices have also increased, in Europe and in Thailand, the rate has been faster for yellowfin, due to the slow catches, he told Undercurrent.sushi in suhl stream
At the end of January, the skipjack prices in Spain were around €1,100/t, with yellowfin at €1,800/t. By mid-March, this had gone to €1,300/t for skipjack and €2,300/t for yellowfin, before the further increases seen to the current levels, he said. During the Brussels seafood show, an export manager with a major tuna company in Ecuador said he feels skipjack prices can continue to increase and even go as high as $2,000/t.jiro dreams of sushi ann arbor The Ecuadorian fleet has been delivering about 20% less landing volumes, as catches on the Eastern Pacific Ocean have been impacted by El Nino weather phenomenon, the source said.ninja sushi menu kapahulu Also, the recent earthquake of 7.8-magnitude has affected the port of Manta, where the Ecuadorian tuna industry is based mainly.
“This is thought to impact prices upwards,” the source said. The tuna sector veteran who gave his views on yellowfin prices disagrees, however. “I think we have hit the ceiling, at the current level of around $1,650/t,” he told Undercurrent. “If the packers are only getting $1,250/t-$1,300/t for the fish in the can, how can prices increase in Bangkok?” he said. The finished goods market would have to firm considerably for further increases in skipjack raw material to be justified, he told Undercurrent. “I would have liked to see prices stay at $1,400/t, for some stability,” he said. Skipjack prices have firmed fast this year, due to the US fleet tie-up over tuna treaty, which has now ended. However, a price level of $1,600/t is already being talked about by canners for May deliveries, he said.ONE year on from winning long running reality TV show Big Brother, Luke Anderson is looking forward to his next big role. The 32-year-old of Mynydd Isa, who was born Laura but underwent gender reassignment, won £50,000 after being crowned the 2012 winner.
The classically trained chef, who previously worked at the Beaufort Park Hotel in New Brighton, near Mold, spent the past year enjoying holidays and spending time with family and friends. This month, however, will see the former Hawarden High School pupil take on a new position as sushi chef at new Chester restaurant Yo Sushi.  “I’m really looking forward to it,”  said Luke, who now lives in the city. “It will be completely different to anything I’ve done before.” Luke is currently training for his new position as a ‘sushi ninja’ in Manchester, and he is confident the new venture will be a success in Chester, which he says ‘has never really had a decent sushi restaurant before’. “I’m really enjoying the training,” he added. “It’s all about cutting up raw fish from scratch, so I’m learning lots of new skills. “I’ve been a chef since the 90s and used to work 70 hour weeks. I was attracted to working for Yo Sushi as they’re very staff focused so there’s lots of room to grow with the company, but hopefully with a better work life balance.”
As well as preparing for his new sushi ninja role, Luke has been making a number of appearances on Big Brother’s Bit on the Side. “I’ve been on about three times this season,” he said. “It’s just a bit of fun, I like meeting new people. I don’t make any money out of it or anything.” Luke also made good on a promise he made to fellow Big Brother housemate Adam Kelly, who he promised £5,000 to if he won.
