sushi conveyor belt tampa

TAMPA — International Plaza shoppers will soon be able to enjoy their favorite sushi dishes delivered to them on a conveyor belt. Yo Sushi, a London-based sushi restaurant chain, will open its third U.S. restaurant Monday at the mall next to Tampa International Airport. Yo Sushi operates 89 sushi bars worldwide, including a Florida restaurant at University Town Center in Sarasota. Darren Wightman, vice president of operations at Yo Sushi, said the success from the opening of Yo Sushi in Sarasota last April led to the company opening another restaurant in Florida. “We love the Florida market and due to our recent Sarasota opening and the positive response, the Tampa market was a natural next step for the brand” Wightman said. “It is a vibrant market, with a diversity of cultures.” Yo Sushi will serve freshly prepared sushi and a wide selection of Japanese dishes at the mall’s food court on a 203-foot continuously revolving conveyor belt that circles the restaurant.

Guests can sit at one of 75 sushi bar stools or booths and choose from one of the dishes which are color coded by price. The meals that are delivered via conveyor belt include sashimi, maki, hand rolls, spicy tuna rolls, and vegetarian options, including salad and vegetarian tempura ranging in price from $3 to $7. For dessert, customers can choose between Dorayaki pancakes, Mochi ice cream, and fresh fruit. Hot dishes such as chicken katsu curry and spicy pepper calamari can be ordered by the “sushi ninjas or via an airline style call button,” according to a press release. Yo Sushi will be opening three more U.S. restaurants — one in New Jersey, also on Tuesday, a New York restaurant opening in early December and a Boston restaurant in early 2016. In 1997, the company opened its first Japanese conveyor belt sushi restaurant in London and now has 74 in the United Kingdom and 15 international restaurants, including the cities of Dubai and Copenhagen.Dishing its finest offerings alongside 12 competitors at last week’s Sushi Battle, the fast-fresh YO!

Sushi gave Tampa a taste of what to expect once its International Plaza location at 2223 N. Westshore Blvd. opens Oct. 26. The new restaurant specializes in serving authentic fare from a rotating conveyor belt. “Kaiten,” or conveyor belt, sushi dining has four steps: sit, choose dishes from the belt, eat, and pay, based on your plate’s price tag. Green dishes are $3, pinks are $5, yellows cost $7 and so on. The menu, made up of seven plate colors, lists a variety of eats — veggie gyoza (dumplings), mochi, spicy yellowtail hand rolls and tuna maki among them. Wine, beer, sake, soft drinks, Pokka tea and Ramune sodas round out the beverages.Sushi operates U.S. franchises in New Jersey and Sarasota’s The Mall at University Town Center, its flagship debuted in London 18 years ago. The brand has more than 80 eateries under its belt (heh... get it?). Another newbie also competed during the inaugural Sushi Battle. Urban Sushi Burrito, which has showed off its skills at other local events without a brick-and-mortar headquarters, offers up sushi burritos like the Mexicanritto, featuring cucumber, avocado and tempura shrimp.
