And sushi aficionados, suffering dynamite/rainbow/spider roll burnout, will find their passion reignited by the Ninza, Crazy, Volcano and Samurai rolls." My husband and I visited this place while on our anniversary trip to Nashville. The restaurant is small, with kind of a warm and shabby/well worn vibe. We were seated in a weird step up spot located directly in front of the restrooms. We ordered a variety of sushi, miso soup and saki....everything was prepared well and tasty. Great service, good fish. Only downside is that they don't offer many combos/specials.
The interior is a little dark/old but still very clean. My wife and I have now visited this place twice now. I meant to write a review last time and forgot. We even wrote down what we loved so we can come back again a third time. We ordered the following and all have complete different textures and flavors!! Dr Daves Roll (One of their top 5... Been here multiple times and it never disappoints. It's no wonder samurai has been voted the best by locals for several years in a row. Authentic sushi made by real sushi chefs. It's not much on atmosphere but with sushi that good who cares. I appreciated the diversity in the role selection, and they had some good choices without getting too fancy. I now live out of the country so this was my first time having American sushi again, because it's not the same outside the United States. I was a bit skeptical of having my American sushi in Nashville, but this place did... I have been here twice and it is my favorite "hole in the wall" sushi place to visit each time I am in Nashville now.
The "Dr. Larry" roll is a personal favorite. The place doesn't look like much but the service is quick and the sushi is great! We had the Doc Dave roll, nimza and crazy monkey roll. The fish is very fresh and tasty. The place fills up quickly. “Decor so so, but Excellent food and Service ” Plan on standing in line and when you get a seat you are squeezed in as tight as they can seat you. People are standing around you and behind you waiting on next available seat. The sushi is good but I didn't care for the atmosphere. When I go out for sushi I would prefer a more relaxing setting but... This place is in walking distance from Vanderbilt University and our hotel at the Courtyard. It seemed to cater to the local college crowd. there is also another sushi place right across the street from this one, i think they used to work there and then decided to go into business for themselves. Its a very small place so seating... We've experienced all sorts of great food during our visit to Nashville and this place was no exception.
