In Japanese, the word “bessou” refers to a second house that’s used for vacations or quick getaways — a home away from home. In New York’s NoHo neighborhood, it’s the name of a new restaurant from Maiko Kyogoku, a Japanese-American restaurateur who worked with the contemporary artist Takashi Murakami before opening Bessou.“For me, Murakami’s artwork has a lot to do with his love and respect for Japanese culture and his desire to share that with the rest of the world,” Kyogoku says. “I owe a lot to him — I don’t think I would have been so gung-ho about opening a restaurant with this outlook, where I’m sharing my own love for my Japanese background, if he didn’t push that point.

It was very inspirational to me.”Bessou isn’t bound solely to Japanese culinary tradition. Much as Murakami is known for blending imagery from traditional Japanese and pop culture (Kyogoku was responsible in part for managing his collaborations with Kanye West and Louis Vuitton), Bessou is a product of Kyogoku’s distinctly bicultural identity.

First and foremost, Kyogoku considers herself a New Yorker. Kyogoku modeled elements of Bessou, like sleek notch shelving, on Murakami’s meticulously organized studios.

A Caesar-esque grilled romaine is topped with soy-marinated quail eggs, jako (tiny sardines) and a creamy sesame dressing; silky inaniwa udon noodles (a specialty of Kyogoku’s mother’s hometown) are paired with tempura — made with whatever local produce looks best at the Union Square Greenmarket that day. “It’s a Japanese restaurant first and foremost, but I want to emphasize that it’s an extension of my home and intended to be everyone’s home,” says Kyogoku, who recently launched an occasional Sunday Supper pop-up series, which brings in guest hosts to oversee special dinner menus. (During the Armory Show in March, the contemporary artist Mickalene Thomas will take over the space.) “What ties it all together is that the hosts have a passion and love for cooking, and that they understand the concept of Bessou as a gathering place,” says Kyogoku. “If they have an appreciation for Japanese food? It was snowing and non one knew what they wanted for dinner so my son went over to Marathon on Sources Blvd for dinner for 6 of us.

It was excellent and still hot.My son brought everyone, including the young grandchildren (8 and 12) chicken brochettes and we all ate everything. It solved a dinner problem - no one had... I always have to visit this restaurant to get food whenever I'm in the area. The food is always fresh and never disappoints as it always well prepared and fresh. Looking forward to my next visit. This place has been around for over 30 years. Originally started in Laval but now have 3 locations. Greek owners and family run business. Consistently good food menu hasn't changed very much over the years. Neither has the quality. Highly recommend the doner PITA combo. “Best doner pita around” This is always my go to place for lamb! Everytime I have been here the food and service have been spot on! This restaurant is not a high end restaurant by any means, but it does offer great meals at great prices. Their Gyro pita plate is amazing but the best part of it is their salad with special Marathon dressing - MMMM!

The staff is courteous I remember going to the original restaurant (4-5 tables) and the food tastes the same. Never overcooked, always crispy and delicious Calamari served as it should be with a zesty cocktai sauce, not marinara! The Chicken brochette is a little pricy, but the big chunks of chicken and veg are excellent. The Tzatiiki is excellent as are the Dolmades, which are served warm with Olive oil and lemon, not on the menu, but ask and... Marathon has been around for a long time, consistently decent for their souvlaki and related specialties, we order take out often, even their salad dressing :)staff is really nice, good calf or money, fast service although i went on Saturday.. A very good experience No other Greek food-chain comes close to Marathons souvlaki. Try their doner pita, it's fantastic! Ambiance is a tad outdated but that's about the only negative thing I can say (and it's not that bad) We always order the combination for 2. It's under $20 and you get 2 pittas, big salad and fries which can be shared in two....
