Ono may be the center of this universe, but the real star of the film is the sushi, and the exquisite yet frustrating beauty with which the camera has captured it. June 17, 2013 | A beautiful ode to an artisan and his culture. January 10, 2013 | Jiro Ono's exacting standards have earned him three Michelin stars, but it's his taciturn nature that spices and sours this documentary. The themes of age and appalling loss give the film a freakishly affecting lyricism. Jiro Dreams of Sushi sets a drool-flecked new standard in food porn, and makes the moanings and gruntings of Nigella Lawson look softcore by comparison. The exquisite nigiri slices gleam with freshness, and you do learn about the component parts to the perfect serving of sea eel or gizzard shad. Ahead of a protocol-bound formal state visit that officially begins on Thursday, Abe took Obama to Sukiyabashi Jiro, the fabled restaurant in Tokyo's fashionable Ginza district widely regarded as the best sushi restaurant in the world.

The Japanese food provided by head chef and proprietor Jiro Ono leaves little time for small talk, much less big talk. MORE: The rival empires of Japanese WhiskeyRather than simply watch the spectacular food porn that is Gelb's doc, I went a step further, traveling directly to the source to offer the following account of chef Jiro's legendary soft-handed, two-fingered technique that pairs fresh nigiri cuts from the Tsukiji fish market with warm and delicate rice.

I had 22 pieces of sushi (within 25 mins). They all looked and tasted beautiful. It is unbelievable that Chef Jiro is 91 years old. He is still doing a elegant job. I just wish they used an online reservation system. I first went to Sukiyabashi Jiro about twenty years ago when I was living in Tokyo and at the time, it probably was the best sushi presentation in all of Tokyo, I no longer believe this to be true, good, but not the best!

As someone who has watched the documentary, Jiro Dreams of Sushi, I was particularly intrigued by the obsessive drive for perfection exuded by the chef and his son in preparing the ingredients and different types of sushi. Last week I was invited to goto lunch at Jiro’s by a close friend and naturally accepted!

What baffles me are all the reviews I am reading about "this is how sushi is supposed to be" or "this is what Jiro wants". But then these same reviewers are the one's who broke the very first rule before even walking into Jiro about "No Photos". So how can you ever support your review about your experience when you...

I was lucky enough get reservations through the hotel (Park Hyatt). We were told to read the restaurant rules before our reservations. We were served by Jiro's son who did an amazing job. The sushi was absolutely amazing. I have been to lots of top and great sushi restaurants in Japan but this surpassed all of them. Me and my girlfriend went there during out trip in Asia. Our table was booked by the concierge at the Park Hyatt where we stayed. We chose the hotel specifically because it is one of the few that can manage to book tables ar Jiro's The experience was exactly as described in the reviews below- quick and not exactly pleasant.... Being a big sushi fan, and after having watched the documentary “Jiro Dreams of Sushi” and having planned a trip to Japan, I was eager to try the Jiro experience. My wife and I were lucky enough to have secured a booking through our Hotel’s concierge. I won’t hide that after reading several negative reviews about Jiro’s tough character, we...
