Joy is a native "Angelina"...residing in Hollywood, California, having lived two years in San Francisco, and three years in Hamburg, Germany. Her parents were professional dancers and she appeared in film/television as a child, however, she was more attracted to the languages and accents around her and even attended a Japanese school as a young girl. Joy was a member of the Theatre Academy at Los Angeles City College, while studying Spanish, German, French and Italian. She was active in theatre in Los Angeles, San Francisco and Hamburg and was a proud member of the much-loved L.A. Repertory Theatre Company. Then as a student at The American Conservatory Theatre in San Francisco, it was in a speech and phonetics class where she truly fell in love with the study and analysis of the sound of language. So, thanks to theatre, phonetics, linguistics, teaching (UCLA and Hamburg), continuous language study, and much more….a dialect coach was born.

What is a Dialect Coach? "A dialect coach assists an actor in assuming a certain regional or foreign accent to perform convincingly in radio, theatrical or film productions..." Often a dialect coach will teach a foreign language portion of a script. A coach can easily “break-down” the sounds for the actor, and work with a translator on finding translations that best fits the character and actor. Some of the many languages Joy has coached are Spanish, French, German, Italian, Arabic, Japanese, Chinese, Mongolian, and even Martian! PRIVATE COACHING: Is typically held at Ms. Ellison’s office in West Hollywood, the client’s location, Skype. ON SET: The coach is on set to assist the actor, listening for speech and accent continuity and any dialogue changes. POST PRODUCTION: A coach is helpful in post in 'spotting' a film for accent/language continuity. ADR: To assist actors easing back-into an accent they may not have used for months. Also, for loop-group accent continuity.
