Ate here with friends during Oakland Restaurant Week (participating restaurants offer a prix fixe tasting menu in addition to their normal menu). I loved everything about the restaurant (service was outstanding, ambiance is great, really cool location in warehouse district near Jack London Square, sangria) a lot but would only rate the food a good/not great. I don't know whether... I've been here twice now. The first time I had fiduea and the second I had the paella with prawns and mussels. The sangria is delicious, too, as were the tapas we ordered, including stuffed peppers and patatas papas. Both times, my group all enjoyed what they ordered, including the paella pollo and the one with squid... this is a great little spot for a quick dinner before a show at Yoshi's. It's walking distance away so worked perfect for us. We visited Spain last fall and have been in love with the cuisine since. The appy's were just as we had them in Barcelona and very delish. I wanted to try a Spanish restaurant for Thursday lunch with a business partner and we decided on Venga Paella. This is a locals' gem and you will not see tourists here. We met at 1 p.m. and there were enough space to get seated without waiting. The waitress was friendly and prompt with drinks and food. Liked everything about this restaurant's offering: a simple menu focuses on the one reason you come here: paella! We tried all 4 varieties of it: vegetarian, chicken, traditional and black squid ink. Moist and tasty, served on a plate with a side salad (not in a paella pan, as the 4 paella's have been cooking for at least 1 hour... When we first saw the sandwich board on a lonely stretch of 3rd Street that is on our regular bicycle riding path we did a double take. "Paella on 3rd Street?". We finally made it inside for dinner last Friday night and found a lively crowd inside a warm and friendly vibe. There are a number of tapas on the... The owner, Eduardo Baleguer, is a friendly Spanish guy who brings his recipes from his family's Valencia restuarant. The restaurant isn't fancy, but it's wood and simple decor are warm and inviting.
